The Soul of Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a beautiful town with a rich history and vibrant culture. It is the gateway to the breathtaking ruins of Angkor, where visitors can explore the complex of intricate stone buildings, including Angkor Wat, the main temple and one of the most magnificent religious structures in the world. Our town offers a wide range of activities and experiences, from cultural shows and museums to exquisite local cuisine. Giant, mysterious faces are carved into the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom. Come experience the heart and soul of Cambodia, right in the heart of Siem Reap.

Programme Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Siem Reap International Airport.

City orientation - Psar Chhas market, Independence Gardens. Apsara dinner show (D)

Phsar Chas, or Old Market is not at all set up for tourists, as locals are known to shop here. It’s also where most chefs source their ingredients. Sample the stalls for a snack of kuy teav (a soup noodle dish punctuated by pork broth); babor (congee); and bai sach chrouk (sweet barbecued pork with rice). It’s also a good time to roam for trinkets and souvenirs.

Enjoy a buffet dinner follows by an Apsara traditional performances and folk dances

AM Apopo Herorats PM Tonle Sap (Chhong Kneas floating village). Phare circus (Section B seating) (B)

Visit to the APOPO Center will bring some positivity to the conversation in learning about part of the land mine solution — a creative one. The center has 33 HeroRATs that have been trained to detect TNT in the ground, up to one-trillionth of a gram. There are demonstrations throughout the day so timing is important if you’d like to be there for one of the planned tours. Five rats are used for demonstrations and the rest work in the field, clearing one section at a time. When TNT is detected, the rats are trained to scratch and alert their human counterparts, who then go in and deactivate the landmines. Where the weight of a human would cause an explosion, the rats’ light weight (usually around 2.5 – 3 lbs.) isn’t enough to set off the mines. A HeroRAT can search an area the size of a tennis court in 30 minutes; a human deminer with a metal detector can take up to 4 days since metal detectors pick up superfluous metal scraps, not just landmines. The rats live about 6-8 years and cost around $6000 each and are specially trained in Tanzania, where they can also be trained to detect TB. It’s fascinating and will give you amazing respect for this entire process.

Then enjoy a boat ride on the Tonle Sap lake. This is the largest permanent fresh-water lake in South East Asia and flows into Tonle Sap River, joining the Mekong in Siem Reap. We will see a fishermen's "floating village" with floating schools, floating police station, etc. It is same as a big village floating on the lake, and the "village" move from place to place following water levels and current.

Spend an evening at Phare, the Cambodian Circus, which is a Cirque du Soleil-type production in an intimate setting. The performances change regularly and are a great way to contribute to the arts while in the region. The circus is a social enterprise that helps cultivate performance arts in Cambodia and assist in providing economic opportunities for youth in disadvantaged areas.

Day 3

Angkor temples – Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat (BL)

  • Bayon Temple

Bayon is one of the most important temples in Angkor Thom, and it has some of the best wall carvings in the area. This is also where you can see the famous stone faces.

  • Ta Phrom Temple

Ta Prohm is the famous ‘Tomb Raider temple’ used in the Angelina Jolie movie. There’s an incredible tree here that is growing on top of one of the temples. It’s a must-see.

  • Angkor Wat

Finally the most famous of all the temples in Siem Reap – Angkor Wat

To cap off the night, visit the Angkor Night Market and peruse a more unique selection of Cambodian handicrafts.
